It's the fairly marginal, non-gospel prompted topics of non-martial sex and homosexuality which rouse the most tension between secular and Christian morality, but I find the conflict on this idea of passivity, of "turning the other cheek," a far more interesting and important clash. The idea of "do not resist an evil person,"  seems to be only sporadically and inconsistently embraced by society. People may see it as an act of cowardice or submission but is actually morally incorrect?

Taken to extremes, does it encourage people to ignore events like the Holocaust? A different attitude always seems to be taken to the suffering of others though, and there's some support for this approach in the gospels but not an awful lot from what I can see. Just to be clear what I'm talking about, I'll post an extract of the passage I'm referring to.

You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you

Well in the example given I suppose it would be not to intervene with any force. The Holocaust is a bad example now I think of it as it isn't why world war 2 started. A hypothetical example if probably better than any real one; if a regieme as brutal as the Nazi's rose to power in your country would you oppose it militarily if you had the means or would this philosophy of not resisting evil stop you?

I find the phrase "do not resist an evil person" inconsistent with the actions of Jesus.

It isn't nesscerily in consistent with the actions of Jesus (although his attack on the traders in the temple springs to mind) but I'd say its inconsistent with the ideas of most Christians. Alot of Christians still see resistance to evil as heroic. Would anyone say that France and Britain declaring war on Germany in 1939 was wrong? Under this philosophy shouldn't they have let Germany invade Poland and wherever else they liked?

To hithere, that was my question really. I think, and I may be wrong, Christians have varying attitudes to this philosophy.

I think anybody who holds an irrational belief in one of the worlds many ridiculous organised religions need to grow the fuck up and research who actually wrote the books they hold as "word of god".

Hardly the point though, was a question about the idea, not whether you are religious or not.

What does that have to do with anything?

Oh you know, nothing.

But I like to feel involved.
